Well, now let me tell ya a story about a woman named Karen Duenas. This ain’t no easy tale, I can tell ya that. It all started back in 2012, when something real bad happened down in Cottonwood. Now, Cottonwood’s a small place, ain’t too much goin’ on, but this here story sure shook the whole town up, ya see. Karen Duenas, she was married to Mark Duenas, for 33 long years. But, instead of a happy, peaceful life, it all ended in bloodshed. Yup, you heard me right. Mark Duenas stabbed his wife Karen to death. I can’t even begin to imagine how somethin’ like that happens, but it did, and it’s been sittin’ on people’s minds ever since.
Now, the whole thing didn’t come out all at once. Took a while for the truth to come to light. Karen’s body was found on the morning of May 5th, 2012, right in their own home. The poor woman had been stabbed multiple times, the kind of wounds that don’t just happen by accident. They say there were two extra stab wounds, too, real savage-like, as if Mark didn’t stop when he shoulda. Mark, well, he didn’t own up to it right away. Nope, he claimed he didn’t do it. Said he was innocent, even while sittin’ in that courtroom during the trial.

But let me tell ya, it ain’t easy foolin’ a whole bunch of people. The evidence stacked up against him. And before you knew it, Mark Duenas was found guilty. He was given a sentence of 25 years to life. That means, if he’s lucky, he might see the light of day again, but not for a long time. Some folks thought that was justice, others felt like it still didn’t bring back Karen.
Now, this all happened back in 2012, and things were pretty quiet for a while. But just when folks thought it was all over and done with, guess what happened? Nearly 10 years after Mark Duenas was sent up the river, his lawyer went and asked for a new trial. Yup, you heard me right. They’re tryin’ to open up the case again. I suppose they think maybe somethin’ wasn’t right with the way it went down, but after all these years, it sure feels like they’re just stirrin’ the pot for nothin’ good.
But if you ask me, there’s somethin’ real wrong when a man takes the life of his wife. Doesn’t matter how long it’s been, or how much time’s passed. Once that blood’s spilled, it don’t go away. And for Karen, well, she’s never comin’ back. They say time heals all wounds, but some things, like this one, time just makes ‘em worse.
So, what’s gonna happen next? Will Mark Duenas get another shot at freedom? Or is this just a matter of makin’ sure that justice stays put, just like it was supposed to? I reckon we’ll see soon enough. But for now, the folks in Cottonwood still remember that day, and they’re not likely to forget the name Karen Duenas anytime soon.
