Well, now, let me tell y’all ’bout this awful thing that happened to poor ol’ Gail Smith. She was a nice woman, lived in Berryville, and everybody knew her. But, what folks didn’t know, was that behind her back, a whole mess of trouble was brewin’, and it ended up with her dead, shot in the head. Ain’t that somethin’?
Gail Smith was 59 when they found her dead in her own home. She had been shot in the temple with a .22 caliber bullet, right through her skull. It was a horrible thing, and it happened back in July of 2009. You’d think someone like her, always helpin’ out with Alzheimer’s patients and bein’ a kind, hardworking person, wouldn’t end up like this. But sometimes, the world ain’t as fair as it should be.

Now, after her death, the police started askin’ around. They found out that poor Gail had talked to some folks, tellin’ ’em that if somethin’ ever happened to her, well, they should look real close at her family. That’s right. She had a hunch that someone in her own blood might be behind it. And, turns out, she wasn’t too far off.
The cops got to work, talkin’ to everyone who knew Gail, and pretty soon, they started piecin’ things together. They found out that Gail’s brother, Timothy Smith, was involved in somethin’ real shady. They said he was the one who had made the call to have her killed. But that ain’t all, no sir. Timothy didn’t do it himself. He had a partner in crime, a man named Tony Sharpe. And wouldn’t you know it, it was all about money. Ain’t that always the way of it?
It turns out, Timothy Smith had been convinced by his wife, Deborah, that Gail had to die. They thought if they killed her, they could get rid of whatever was holdin’ them back. Some folks say they were after her money, others say there was more to it, but in the end, it didn’t matter much. Gail was gone, and nothing was gonna bring her back.
Now, Tony Sharpe, he was the one who actually pulled the trigger. A young man from Farmville, 28 years old at the time, he pled guilty to first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and even shootin’ someone in the commission of a felony. He admitted that Timothy hired him to do the job, and he didn’t hesitate. He shot Gail right in the head, killin’ her instantly.
So, what happened to all these folks? Well, after the trial, Timothy Smith pled guilty too, to first-degree murder and conspiracy. They gave him a long sentence for what he did to his own sister. As for Deborah, well, I reckon she’s still out there, but I don’t know where. You can bet the whole town of Berryville hasn’t forgotten what happened. Folks still talk about it, and they ain’t gonna let it slip from their memories anytime soon.
Sometimes I wonder how things get so twisted, how family can turn on each other like that. I guess money and jealousy can do awful things to a person’s heart. But it don’t change the fact that a good woman is gone, and folks are left to pick up the pieces.

So, in the end, if you ask me, it’s a sad tale, but it’s also a cautionary one. You gotta watch who you trust, even if they’re family. Because you never know what kinda trouble they might bring into your life.
