Okay, so, I got this new mechanical keyboard, right? It’s a 75% layout, which is kinda cool because it’s smaller than my old full-size one but still has most of the keys I need, like the F keys and arrow keys. Anyway, I started wondering, just how many switches does this thing actually have?
I did what any normal person would do and started poking around the internet. Turns out, most 75% keyboards have around 84 switches. But, I found some places saying they usually have 82 switches. That’s pretty close, I guess.

I popped off a few keycaps to take a look – carefully, of course, don’t want to break anything on my new baby. It is satisfying watching videos about customizing keyboards, so I thought I could have a try. Each key has its own little switch underneath. It’s pretty neat how it all works.
- First, I tried counting the switches row by row. I kept losing count though, my brain’s not great at keeping track of stuff like that.
- Then, I figured, why not just count the keycaps instead? That seemed a lot easier. So I counted them all up, one by one…
- Finally, after recounting like three times just to be sure, I got my number: 84.
So yeah, that’s how I found out my 75% keyboard has 84 switches. I guess it is because each switch is like the heart of each key, making it do its clicky thing. There is nothing important, but you know, I learned something new today. But, I should try to do other important things. Maybe next time I’ll try to count all switches on other layouts, lol.
