I just got back from a whirlwind 2 weeks in Vietnam, and let me tell you, it was a wild ride! I’ve always wanted to explore Southeast Asia, and Vietnam seemed like the perfect starting point. So, I booked my flights, packed my bags, and set off on an adventure.
Touch Down in Ho Chi Minh City
Landed in Ho Chi Minh City, and the energy hit me right away. The streets were a chaotic ballet of motorbikes, vendors, and pedestrians. I checked into my little hostel in District 1 and immediately went out to explore. I wandered through Ben Thanh Market, trying to haggle for souvenirs (with limited success, I might add). The food scene was insane – I ate my weight in pho and banh mi from street stalls. I also visited the War Remnants Museum, which was a heavy but important experience. It really gave me a new perspective on the country’s history. I spent three days to explore the Ho Chi Minh City.
Coastal Charms of Hoi An
Next, I took a night bus up the coast to Hoi An. This ancient trading port is absolutely beautiful. I rented a bicycle and cruised around the old town, admiring the colorful lanterns and tailor shops. I even got a few custom-made outfits – gotta look sharp, right? One evening, I took a cooking class and learned how to make some classic Vietnamese dishes. I don’t think my spring rolls will win any awards, but hey, I tried! I stayed in Hoi An for 4 days, enjoyed the beaches here.
Imperial City of Hue
From Hoi An, I headed further north to Hue, the former imperial capital. I explored the massive Citadel, wandering through the palaces, temples, and gates. It felt like stepping back in time. I also took a boat trip along the Perfume River, visiting the elaborate tombs of past emperors. It was a bit touristy, but still a cool experience. Hue was also the cheapest place for food, and I enjoyed it very much. I spent 2 days in Hue.
Natural Wonders of Ha Long Bay
No trip to Vietnam is complete without a visit to Ha Long Bay. I booked a 3-day, 2-night cruise through the bay, and it was simply breathtaking. We sailed among towering limestone karsts, kayaked through hidden caves, and swam in the emerald waters. It was pure magic. The food on the boat was surprisingly good, too! We had fresh seafood every day. In the evening, we sang and danced on the boat.
Back to Reality
After Ha Long Bay, I flew back to Ho Chi Minh City from Hai Phong for my flight home. It was tough to leave Vietnam. Those two weeks were packed with incredible experiences, delicious food, and friendly people. I definitely left a piece of my heart in that country. It is a place worth to visit. Can’t wait to go back someday and explore even more!
