Keznit for beginners: Everything you need to know is right here!

Posted on 13/01/202513/01/2025 by silkroads

Today, I wanna talk about how I started knitting. It was a total whim, something to do with my hands while I was watching TV, you know?

So, first off, I got some yarn and needles. I had no clue what I was doing, just picked some colors I liked and needles that felt okay. I didn’t even know there were different types! It was all new to me. The first thing I tried was casting on. Man, that was a struggle! The yarn kept slipping, and the loops were all uneven. I watched a bunch of videos online, and it took me forever to get the hang of it. I ripped it out and started over so many times, my hands were cramping.

Keznit for beginners: Everything you need to know is right here!
  • Figuring out how to hold the needles – felt so awkward.
  • Getting the yarn tension right – it was either too loose or too tight.
  • Keeping track of the stitches – I kept dropping them or adding extra ones by mistake.

Then came the actual knitting part. I chose the most basic stitch, the knit stitch. Even that was tricky at first! I’d get into a rhythm, and then I’d mess up and have to go back. It was frustrating, but I was determined to figure it out. It was like this weird mix of being super focused and totally zoning out at the same time. I made a ton of wonky-looking little squares before I finally made something that looked like a scarf. It was full of holes and uneven, but I was so proud of it!

After that, I tried other stitches like purling and ribbing. They each had their own challenges, but it felt good to learn something new. I made a few more scarves and a wonky hat, mostly for friends and family. It’s fun to give them stuff I made, even if it’s not perfect.

Moving on to bigger projects.

Eventually, I got brave enough to try a sweater. I found this pattern online that looked cool. I spent hours trying to understand it. It was like trying to read a different language, full of all these weird abbreviations. I learned a lot just trying to decode the pattern. Then I went and got a bunch more yarn, this time paying attention to the type and weight. I started the sweater, and it took forever! I made so many mistakes and had to redo parts over and over. But, slowly, it started to come together. Seeing it go from a pile of yarn to an actual piece of clothing was amazing. When I finally finished it, I was so proud of myself! It fit okay, not perfect, but it was wearable, and I did it all by myself.

Knitting’s become my go-to thing when I need to chill out. It’s satisfying to make something with your own hands, and it’s cool to see how far I’ve come since I first started. I am still not an expert by any means, but I can make some decent stuff now. I even started following some knitting accounts online, and it’s cool to see what other people are making. It’s like this whole community I didn’t know existed.

So, yeah, that’s my knitting story. From a total newbie to someone who can make a sweater, it’s been a fun, sometimes frustrating, but always rewarding journey.
