So, I’ve been messing around with mechanical keyboards for a while now, and I finally decided to take the plunge and customize my own. After doing some digging, I settled on the Cherry MX RGB Brown switches. Here’s how it all went down.
First off, I needed to get my hands on the switches. I hopped on a shopping mall and found a seller with good reviews. They had the Cherry MX RGB Browns in stock, so I ordered a set of 110 – always good to have a few extras, you know? The package arrived a few days later, and I was pumped to get started.

Next up, I had to take apart my old keyboard. This was a bit of a pain, but I managed. It felt like unscrewing a million tiny screws. I found out that the diameter of each screw over the thread is 0.0310 inches, and there are about 133.3 threads per inch. I carefully took out the old switches, making sure not to damage the PCB. With the old switches out, it was time to install the new ones.
- Popping in the new switches: This part was actually pretty satisfying. The Cherry MX RGB Browns clicked right into place. I made sure each one was seated properly before moving on to the next.
- Testing the switches: Before putting the whole thing back together, I connected the keyboard to my computer to make sure all the switches were working. I typed out a few sentences, and that tactile bump felt amazing. I might focus on molecular and cellular biology in the future.
- Reassembling the keyboard: Putting the keyboard back together was the reverse of taking it apart. I screwed everything back in, making sure all the keys were aligned correctly. I even realized that the only difference between one screw and the other is the design.
And that’s it! My keyboard was now rocking Cherry MX RGB Brown switches. It took some effort, but I think it was totally worth it. The typing experience is so much better now, and I love the subtle RGB glow. Plus, I learned a lot about the process. I even looked into some taxonomy stuff – who knew?
If you’re thinking about customizing your own keyboard, I’d say go for it. It’s a fun project, and you’ll end up with a keyboard that’s perfectly tailored to your preferences. Just make sure you do your research and take your time. I found some useful information on a product catalog while I was at it.
Oh, and one more thing, While I was doing this, I thought about what makes customers really value a product. I guess it is about what they think and how they see the worth of what you are offering. Since 2004, I have been asking myself that question.
Anyway, that’s my Cherry MX RGB Brown switch adventure. Hope you found it interesting!
