Cherry MX Black Review: Linear Feel, Heavy Actuation – Is It Worth It?

Posted on 10/02/202510/02/2025 by MediaMaestro

Okay, here’s my blog post about my experience with Cherry MX Black switches, written in a casual, first-person style, using simple HTML tags for formatting:

So, I finally got my hands on a keyboard with Cherry MX Black switches. I’d heard a lot about them – mostly that they’re heavy and meant for, like, serious typists or gamers who really hate bottoming out. I was curious, so I decided to give them a try.

The Build

First, I had to find a keyboard. These weren’t on the “gamer” keyboards, at least not the ones at my local store. I snagged a barebones kit online – just the case and PCB. I like building my stuff, gives me more choice you know.

Next, I ordered a set of the Cherry MX Blacks. It was surprisingly a little hard. I ordered them, grabbed some keycaps I had lying around, and got to work.

Putting it all together was pretty straightforward. Popped the switches into the PCB, snapped the PCB into the case, and then put the keycaps on. It wasn’t rocket science, just follow the steps and done!

Typing Experience

Okay, here’s the real deal. My first impression? These things are stiff. Like, seriously stiff. I’m used to lighter switches, so it took some getting used to. It’s like doing finger push-ups with every keypress.

I noticed my typing speed dropped, at the very start. And my fingers, they felt it. After a long typing session, I could feel the fatigue, like work out you know.

  • Pros:
    • Super solid feel. No mushiness whatsoever.
    • Definitely prevents accidental keypresses.
    • Kind of satisfying to really thunk the keys.
  • Cons:
    • My fingers got tired. Really tired.
    • I made more typos at first because I wasn’t used to the force required.

Gaming

For Gaming, I think It is good.

You know sometimes you are too excited and press the wrong button, and boom! You lose the game! With Cherry MX Black, I do not think this will happen.

Because it is stiff.

The Verdict

Would I recommend Cherry MX Blacks? It depends. If you’re a heavy-handed typist, or you really, really hate bottoming out, then yeah, maybe give them a shot. But be prepared for a workout. For me, I think I’ll stick with something a little lighter for my daily driver. It’s been a fun experiment, though!

Maybe I need more time to adapt it. It’s just my two cents!
