Okay, folks, let’s dive into my little adventure with tequila pairings!
So, I’ve always been a “tequila, lime, salt” kind of guy. You know, the classic way. But I got it into my head that I wanted to try something… fancier. Something more grown-up. I started this whole thing by just wanting more of it, more than slam it down, so I began to explore more.

The Experiment Begins
First, I grabbed a few different tequilas. Nothing crazy expensive, just a decent blanco, a reposado, and an añejo. Figured I needed a range to really see what’s what. Then came the fun part: deciding what to pair them with!
I raided my fridge and pantry. Seriously, it was like a scavenger hunt. I ended up with:
- Some dark chocolate (the good stuff, 70% cacao)
- A chunk of aged cheddar cheese (because why not?)
- A few slices of grilled pineapple (saw it online, looked interesting)
- Orange slices (another classic, but different from lime)
- Spicy mango salsa ( I felt bold)
The Tasting (and the Mess)
I lined everything up on the kitchen counter, poured myself small shots of each tequila, and got to work. It’s safe to say the process was a bit clumsy, but the different tastes I experienced, there are no words.
The blanco, I tried first with the orange slice. It was surprisingly good! The sweetness of the orange really played well with the bright, peppery notes of the tequila. Then I bravely took a bite, and I mean a bite, a small bite of the grilled pineapple with it, and wow, this blew me away. The smoky char and the sweetness were an amazing match, this I would say was my favorite.
Next up, the reposado. I paired this with the aged cheddar. The nuttiness of the cheese really brought out the caramel and oaky flavors of the tequila. It was a much richer, more mellow experience. The spicy mango salsa, though? Not a winner. It just clashed with the tequila in a weird way. Too much going on, I guess. Note to self: don’t be too ambitious.
Finally, the añejo. This one I saved for the dark chocolate. Let me tell you, it was like a dessert in itself. The chocolate’s bitterness and the tequila’s vanilla and spice notes just danced together perfectly. It was smooth, decadent, and definitely my favorite pairing of the night.

The Verdict
Honestly, this whole thing was way more fun than I expected. I discovered some amazing combinations (grilled pineapple and blanco, forever!) and some not-so-great ones (mango salsa, never again!).
I’m no expert, but I learned that tequila is way more versatile than I thought. It’s not just for shots! And playing around with different flavors can be a real blast. I would say, just try and see, maybe you will love it too.
