Well, you see, briars are them stubborn plants, real thorny and all. They grow all over the place if you let ’em, but if you got a nice lawn, you don’t want them things takin’ over. So what do you do to kill briars but keep your grass nice and green? Let me tell you.
First off, you got some stuff called herbicides. Now, don’t be thinkin’ too hard about what that is. It’s just a fancy name for some strong stuff that kills plants. The kind you’re lookin’ for is one with glyphosate or triclopyr in it. Now, glyphosate, that stuff will kill just ’bout anything green if you’re not careful, so don’t go sprayin’ it all willy-nilly, or you’ll end up with a patch of dirt where your lawn used to be. But triclopyr, now that’s a bit more picky. It’ll take care of the briars without hurtin’ the grass much.

Another thing you can do, and I heard it works real good, is mix up some vinegar and salt. You just get yourself a big ol’ bottle of vinegar, dump some salt in there, and spray it on them briars. It dries ‘em right up, but it don’t mess with the grass so much. Now, don’t be thinkin’ you can use that too much though, ‘cause if you go overboard with the salt, well, then your grass won’t like that none either. So, keep it light.
Manual Work
If you’re more of a hands-on kind of person, well, you can just dig them briars up by the roots. Let me tell ya, this ain’t easy work. Them roots run deep and wide, like they’re tryin’ to take over the whole yard. You gotta get a good grip on the base, yank ’em out, and haul ‘em off somewhere they can’t sprout back up. Now, if you’re just cuttin’ ‘em off at the top, all you’re doin’ is givin’ them a trim. They’ll just come back stronger and thicker, like a bad haircut. So dig ’em out proper if you want ’em gone for good.
Burn ’em Out
Some folks say burnin’ them works too. You know, set fire to the briars. But you gotta be careful with that ’cause fire ain’t no joke. Make sure you’re in a safe place, far from anything that can catch fire. Once you burn ’em down, the heat kills ‘em, but your grass won’t be bothered much. But, of course, fire ain’t for everyone.
Keep Up with Maintenance

Now, once you get rid of the briars, don’t think your work is done. Those sneaky plants will try to come back if you ain’t watchin’. You gotta keep up with your lawn. That means pullin’ out any new shoots as soon as you see ’em, sprayin’ a little herbicide here and there, or even usin’ that vinegar mix if you like it. Regular maintenance is the key. Briars don’t stand a chance if you keep on top of things.
Oh, and don’t forget, sometimes, it just ain’t worth it to fight these things on your own. If you got a yard full of ’em, and you’re spendin’ more time fightin’ briars than enjoyin’ your grass, well, you might just want to call in the professionals. They’ll know what to do, and they’ll make sure your grass stays green while the briars are long gone.
Other Tips
- Use gloves when handlin’ briars. Them thorns are sharp and they’ll get you good if you ain’t careful.
- Try to water your grass well. A healthy lawn makes it harder for briars to take over.
- Don’t forget to throw the briars far away after removin’ ’em. You don’t want ’em takin’ root again.
So there you have it. Whether you’re usin’ herbicides, diggin’ ’em up, or burnin’ ’em down, you can kill them briars without hurtin’ your grass. Just takes a bit of know-how and some elbow grease. Now get out there and show them briars who’s boss!
