Okay, so I was at my desk the other day, sifting through a pile of emails, you know how it is. One of them was about this community project we’re trying to get off the ground. Lots of numbers flying about, budgets and whatnot. And there it was, a figure: 20000. That was the total estimated cost for one phase. Then, tucked away in a paragraph, it mentioned that a local business was offering to cover “15 percent” of that specific phase if we met certain conditions. Great news, but my first thought was, “Okay, how much is that actually in real money?”
Figuring it Out – My Way
Now, I could’ve grabbed my phone and punched it into the calculator app. Too easy, right? Sometimes I just like to work these things out in my head or on a scrap piece of paper. Makes me feel like my brain cells are still doing their job. So, I sat there for a minute, looking at “15 percent of 20000.”

Here’s how my mind tackled it, nothing fancy:
First, I thought about 10 percent. That’s always the easiest one for me. For 20000, you just kinda slide the decimal point one place to the left, or mentally knock off a zero.
So, 10 percent of 20000 is 2000. Easy peasy.
Okay, so I had 10 percent down. But I needed 15 percent. That means I still needed to find another 5 percent.
My next thought was, well, 5 percent is just half of 10 percent, isn’t it?

Since I already knew 10 percent was 2000, then half of that would be 1000.
So, 5 percent of 20000 is 1000.
Right, now I had the pieces:
- The 10 percent part was 2000.
- The 5 percent part was 1000.
To get the full 15 percent, I just needed to add those two bits together.
So, 2000 + 1000.

That comes out to 3000.
So, there it was. That “15 percent” offer meant 3000 towards our 20000 phase cost. Not bad at all! It really helped to see the actual number. Suddenly that “15 percent” felt a lot more concrete and a lot more helpful. It’s funny how breaking down a percentage makes it less intimidating and more, well, real. Now, the next step was to make sure we met those conditions for the funding. Always something, isn’t there? But at least I knew what we were aiming for.
