Alright folks, let me tell you about my recent keyboard adventure. I was on a mission to find the absolute lightest keyboard switch possible. Why? Because my fingers were starting to feel like they’d been through a boxing match after a long day of typing. Time to make a change!
First, I dove into the depths of the internet. Researched different switch types, force actuation, all that jazz. My head was spinning with terminology! But I zeroed in on a few that seemed promising: Cherry MX Silver, Gateron Clears, and some Speed switches from Kailh. The hunt was on!
Next, I ordered a switch tester. You know, one of those little plastic things with like, twenty different switches on it. Spent a good hour just pressing each one, trying to get a feel for the actuation force. My wife thought I was nuts. But hey, gotta do what you gotta do for optimal comfort!
The Gateron Clears felt the lightest out of the box, but something was still missing. They felt…scratchy. Not a smooth press at all. So, I figured, “Why not try lubing them?” Watched a few YouTube tutorials (warning: it’s a deep rabbit hole!), got some Krytox 205g0, and went to town.
Disassembled each switch, carefully applied the lube to the stem, the springs, the housing – the whole shebang! It was tedious, I’m not gonna lie. Took me like three hours to do a batch of sixty switches. My fingers were covered in grease. But the result? Holy moly! The lubed Gateron Clears were buttery smooth and felt even lighter. Like typing on clouds!
Then came the desoldering. My poor keyboard! It had been through a lot. Heated up the soldering iron, carefully removed the old switches (almost burned myself a few times, gotta be careful!). This part always makes me nervous.
Finally, the moment of truth. Popped in the lubed Gateron Clears. Soldered them in place. Gave the keyboard a test run. And…BOOM! It was amazing! The lightest, smoothest typing experience ever. My fingers were singing with joy. No more keyboard-induced finger fatigue!
So, there you have it. My quest for the lightest keyboard switch. It was a journey, for sure. But totally worth it. Now I can type all day without feeling like I’ve been wrestling a bear. Highly recommend giving it a shot if your fingers are starting to complain!
