Alright, so I’ve been meaning to share this little project I did recently. It’s about comparing mouse shapes. Sounds simple, right? But you know how it is, you see a bunch of mice online, they all look kinda similar in pictures, but then you get one and it feels completely different. It’s been bugging me for a while.
My Starting Point – The usual confusion
I had a few mice lying around, and a friend was asking for a recommendation. I tried to explain the differences, you know, this one’s longer, that one has a higher hump. But just talking about it, or even holding them up one after another, it wasn’t really clicking. The subtle curves, the way your fingers rest, it’s hard to capture with just words or a quick glance.
I looked online, of course. Lots of reviews, specs, dimensions. But numbers like “length: 120mm” don’t tell you where the hump peaks, or how wide the grip actually feels. I wanted something more visual, more direct. Something I could do myself without fancy gear.
The First Messy Attempt
So, my first thought was super basic. I grabbed a piece of paper and tried to trace the outlines of the mice. Man, that was a clumsy effort. The pen would slip, the mouse would move, and the outlines looked like a kid’s drawing. Plus, it only gave me a 2D footprint, which doesn’t tell you much about the height or the curves on top. Pretty useless, gotta be honest.
Figuring Out a Better Way
I realized I needed a consistent setup. I needed to see them from the same angles, with some kind of reference. So, I grabbed my phone – nothing fancy, just a regular smartphone camera. The key, I figured, was consistency.
Here’s what I ended up doing:

Found a flat surface: Just my desk. Cleared off the junk.

Used a plain background: I grabbed a big sheet of white paper. This helped make the mouse shapes stand out.

Set up my phone: I tried to keep the phone at the same height and angle for every shot. I didn’t have a tripod handy, so I kinda propped it up with some books. Not perfect, but way better than just winging it.

Took pictures from key angles: Top-down, side profile (both sides, if they were different), and from the back to see the hump shape. For the side and back shots, I placed a ruler next to the mouse. This was a game-changer for getting a sense of scale and specific heights or lengths of features.
The Actual Comparison Process
Once I had all the pictures, I just opened them up on my computer screen. I put them side-by-side. It wasn’t super scientific, no complex software or anything. Just looking. But because the angles and the background were consistent, and I had that ruler in some shots, the differences really popped out.
I looked for things like:

Overall length and width – but now I could see where that width was, or how the length tapered.

The height and position of the main hump. Is it in the middle? Towards the back?

The slope on the front and back.

How the sides curved in or out. This is super important for grip.

Button height and the comfort grooves on them, if any.
It was pretty eye-opening. A mouse that I thought was “small” was actually just shorter, but quite wide in the middle. Another one looked really flat in marketing photos, but my side-profile shot showed a subtle curve that made a big difference to how it felt under my palm.
What I Learned from This Little Exercise
The biggest thing was that these small, almost invisible differences in shape have a huge impact on comfort and control. You can read all the specs you want, but seeing the profiles lined up, even in simple photos like mine, tells a much richer story. It’s not just about “big” or “small” but how it’s big or small, and where the curves are.
For example, I had two mice with almost identical length and width specs. But one had its main hump further back, making it great for my palm grip. The other’s hump was more central, which felt way better for a claw grip. I wouldn’t have easily pinpointed that just from numbers or holding them individually for a few seconds.

Nothing groundbreaking, but a practical way I found to actually understand the physical differences between these things we use every single day.
