Okay, so last weekend I tried something totally new: axe throwing! I saw a Groupon for “axe throwing westminster co” and thought, “Why the heck not?” I needed to blow off some steam.
First, I looked up the place online. It’s this warehouse-type building, looked kinda industrial-chic. I booked a slot online – super easy. Then I showed up a little early, filled out a waiver (standard stuff, you know, “I won’t sue you if I accidentally chop off my foot”), and waited for my turn.

Next up, the instructor. A burly dude with a beard and a flannel shirt. He gave us the safety briefing. Basically, “Don’t be an idiot.” He showed us how to hold the axe – grip it tight but not TOO tight – and the basic throwing technique. Two hands, bring it back over your head, and let it fly. Sounds simple, right?
I went first. Totally whiffed. Axe bounced off the board and landed with a thunk on the floor. Okay, retry. This time it stuck… but way off to the side. Not even close to the bullseye. Frustrating! The instructor gave me some tips: “More wrist action,” he said. “Follow through.”
After about ten throws, I started getting the hang of it. The axe started sticking more consistently. Not always in the bullseye, but at least ON the target. The feeling when that axe hits the wood with a satisfying thwack? Man, it’s addictive.
We played a few games – kinda like darts, but with axes. Aim for specific targets, try to get the highest score. Got competitive REAL quick. My arm started getting tired, but I was determined to at least hit the bullseye once.
Finally, after about an hour and a half, I actually managed to nail the bullseye! Just once, but still! Victory! I felt like a total badass.
Overall, axe throwing was a surprisingly fun and cathartic experience. Definitely recommend giving it a try if you’re looking for something different to do.
- The Good: Super fun, great stress relief, surprisingly challenging.
- The Bad: My arm was sore for days afterward.
Would I go again? Heck yeah! I need to practice and get that bullseye consistently!
