Okay, so I’ve been seeing this “mahia” drink pop up all over the internet, and it looked interesting. Fig, dates, and water? Sounded weird, but I was game to give it a try. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, so I decided to make it myself.
Gathering the Ingredients
First things first, I had to get the stuff to make it. The recipe I found called for:

- Dried figs (I used about a cup)
- Dates (also about a cup)
- Water (enough to cover everything)
- Optional: Anise seeds(I skipped this)
I went to my local grocery store and grabbed some dried figs and dates. Seemed pretty straightforward.
The Process
Back home, the first step was to wash the figs and dates. I just rinsed them under some cold water to get rid of any dust or whatever.
Then I put them in a big jar. Next, I poured in enough water to cover them completely. The recipe said to let it sit for, like, days, I only soaked it 24h in the fridge.
After 24h. I took the jar, opened, and took out all of the water, and put figs and dates to blender. After that I added 2 cups of water and blend everything together. I strained the mix using a cheesecloth, and then I put the juice back in to the jar and leave it on the counter.
The hardest part was waiting. The instructions said to let it ferment for a few days, stirring occasionally. It will be ready when you will see some bobbles.

The Result
Finally, after few days, it looked ready. I took a sip. Honestly, it was…interesting. Kind of sweet, a little earthy, and definitely different. It wasn’t bad, just not what I expected. Maybe I did something wrong, or maybe it’s just an acquired taste. I’ll probably try making it again sometime, and see if I can tweak the recipe to my liking.
