Okay, so, today I want to share my little project about making a wearable HEPA filter. You know, with all the stuff going on in the air these days, I thought, why not have a personal air purifier that I can just wear around? Sounds a little bit crazy, maybe, but I went ahead and tried it anyway. And, you know what, it’s kind of cool.
First, I needed to get my hands on a HEPA filter. I found out that these things are pretty good at catching tiny particles, like dust, pollen, and even some bacteria. After checking around at some stores, I found these cylindrical ones that were just the right size, not too big, not too small. Perfect for what I had in mind. They said on the box that it can get rid of, like, 99.97% of the bad stuff in the air, as small as 0.3 microns. That sounded pretty good to me!

Next up, I needed a way to actually wear this thing. I grabbed a small, battery-powered fan, the kind you might use to keep cool in the summer. I figured I could attach the filter to the fan, and then wear the whole setup somehow. It took a bit of messing around, but I managed to fix the filter onto the fan using some tape and a few zip ties. It wasn’t pretty, but it held together.
- Step 1: Gather your stuff. You’ll need a HEPA filter, a small fan, some tape, and zip ties. Oh, and batteries for the fan.
- Step 2: Put it together. This is where you get to be a little creative. Attach the filter to the fan. Make sure it’s secure!
- Step 3: Make it wearable. I used a lanyard to hang it around my neck, but you could use a strap or something else.
For making it wearable, I found an old lanyard from some conference I went to. I tied it to the fan-filter combo, and boom, I had my very own wearable air purifier. I turned on the fan, and I could feel the air getting sucked through the filter. It felt surprisingly good, kind of like a clean breeze on my face.
I wore it around the house for a day, just to see how it felt. It was a little weird at first, having this thing hanging around my neck, but I got used to it. And you know what? The air did seem a bit fresher. Placebo effect? Maybe. But I like to think it was actually doing something. I even took a walk outside, and it felt nice to have that extra bit of clean air, especially when a dusty truck drove by.
My Thoughts
All in all, this little experiment was pretty fun. It’s not something I’d wear every day, but it’s nice to know I have a way to get some cleaner air if I need it. And hey, it’s a good conversation starter! So, if you’re feeling a bit adventurous and want to try something new, give this wearable HEPA filter a shot. It’s a bit of work, but it’s kind of cool to have your own personal bubble of clean air.
