Okay, so I was thinking, should I go with linear or tactile switches for my gaming setup? I’ve been doing some digging, and it seems like it really comes down to what you like, right?
I started by checking out what others had to say. Some folks swear by linear switches because they’re smooth. No bumps, no hitches, just straight down and straight up. They say it’s great for games where you need to press keys super fast, like in shooters or rhythm games. I get that. You don’t want anything slowing you down when you’re in the heat of the moment. I tried tapping my keys really fast with my current keyboard, and yeah, sometimes it feels a bit sluggish.

Then I looked into tactile switches. These have a little bump that you feel when you press them. People say it helps with accuracy because you can feel exactly when the key is pressed. That makes sense, especially for typing. I do a fair bit of typing when I’m not gaming, so maybe tactile would be better for that. I tried to see if I could feel the bump on my current keyboard, and I think I did. It’s kind of nice to have that feedback.
But then I thought, does that bump slow you down in games? I read somewhere that it might make double-tapping a bit harder. Like, if you need to press a key twice really fast, that bump could get in the way. I tried double-tapping on my keyboard, and it felt okay, but maybe with a tactile switch, it would be different. I don’t want to mess up my moves in a game because of the keyboard.
I also saw some recommendations for specific switches. There were these Razer Red Optical switches and Cherry Speed Silver switches that were supposed to be really fast for gaming. I thought, “Wow, that sounds perfect!” But then I remembered I also need to use my keyboard for other stuff, like writing emails and documents. I need something that works well for both gaming and typing.
So, I decided to try out a few keyboards with different switches. First, I borrowed a friend’s keyboard with linear switches. I played a few rounds of my favorite shooter, and it felt really smooth. No resistance, just quick and easy key presses. I could see why people liked these for gaming. I was definitely faster with my movements, and it felt great.
Next, I tried another friend’s keyboard with tactile switches. I did some typing first, and it felt great. The bump was satisfying, and I felt like I was typing more accurately. Then I tried gaming with it. It was a bit different from the linear switches, but not bad. I could still play well, but it didn’t feel as fast. I did notice that double-tapping was a little harder, but not by much.
After all that testing, I started to lean towards linear switches. I do a lot of gaming, and the smoothness is just too good to pass up. I found myself enjoying games more with that quick response. I also realized that I don’t really mind the lack of feedback when I’m typing. I guess I’m used to it.

My Decision
So, I think I’m going to go with a keyboard that has linear switches, maybe I’ll get some Cherry MX Reds or something. I want something that’s fast and smooth for gaming. But I also think I’ll keep my old keyboard with tactile switches around for when I need to do a lot of typing. Best of both worlds, right?
Here’s what I ended up deciding:
- For Gaming: Linear switches because they are so smooth.
- For Typing: I’ll just use my old tactile keyboard.
- Switch Type: Thinking of Cherry MX Reds, seems like a good start.
It’s been a bit of a journey, but I think I’ve finally figured out what works best for me. It’s all about trying things out and seeing what feels right. Now I’m excited to get my new keyboard and start gaming! Hope this helps anyone else trying to make the same decision.
