Okay, so, I got into this whole mechanical keyboard thing a while back. You know, those clicky-clacky keyboards that everyone seems to be obsessed with? Yeah, that’s me now. Anyway, I started with some basic switches, the usual reds and browns, you know, the gateway switches. But I was always curious about those fancy “Speed” switches I kept hearing about. Finally, I decided to take the plunge and try out the Cherry MX Silvers.
First, I got a small pack online. I mean, you never know, right? You gotta try things out before you go all in. They arrived in a neat little box, all shiny and new. I grabbed my trusty switch puller and started swapping them out on my keyboard. I only replaced a few keys at first, mostly the ones I use for gaming – WASD, spacebar, you get the idea.

The first thing I noticed? These things are fast. Like, really fast. I’m not kidding, it felt like I barely had to touch the keys for them to register. It was a weird sensation at first, almost too sensitive. I was used to having to press down a bit more with my old switches. The Cherry MX Silver switches only need a travel distance of 1.2mm, that’s it! But I started to get used to it, and that’s when the fun began. I’m not a pro gamer or anything, but man, did these switches make a difference in my games. My reactions felt snappier, my movements more precise. I felt like I had a slight edge, you know?
Now, these switches are not just for gaming. Even typing feels a little bit different. I’m a pretty fast typist, always have been, and I found that the silvers kept up with me effortlessly. I did make a few more typos at first, though. Again, that sensitivity thing. But once I adjusted, it was smooth sailing. Sometimes I even feel like I type faster with the silvers.
Here’s a little list of things I did and noticed during my time with these switches:
- Tried them out on a few keys first, not my whole keyboard.
- Noticed they were super sensitive and fast.
- Felt a difference in my gaming performance.
- Adjusted my typing style to avoid accidental key presses.
- Enjoyed the overall speed and responsiveness.
They’re linear switches, so no clicky sound or tactile bump. Just a smooth, straight-down press. And they’re surprisingly quiet for a mechanical switch. Not silent, mind you, but definitely quieter than some of the other switches I’ve tried. This makes them fine for the office, but I wouldn’t use them in a library or somewhere super quiet. You still get that satisfying “thock” sound when you bottom out, which I personally love.
My final thoughts?
I’m really digging these Cherry MX Silvers. I mean, I replaced all the switches on my main keyboard with them. That’s how much I like them. They’re not for everyone, though. If you’re heavy-handed or prefer a more pronounced tactile feel, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you’re looking for speed and responsiveness, especially for gaming, these switches are definitely worth checking out. I wouldn’t call myself a keyboard expert, but I know what I like, and these silvers? They’re a winner in my book.
