Okay, so I’ve been wanting to really dig into the lyrics of “Glory to God in the Highest” – you know, that classic Christmas song? I feel like I sing it every year, but I wanted to actually understand the words I was belting out. So, that’s what I did today!
Getting Started
First, I pulled up a bunch of different versions online. I figured there might be some variations, and I wanted to get a good sense of the most common wording.

- I used a search engine and just typed in “glory to god in the highest lyrics”. Easy peasy.
- Found several websites that I will not share.
Breaking it Down
Next, I started to compare the different versions I found. There were a few minor differences, like “on earth peace” versus “peace on earth,” but the core message was the same. I decided to focus on the most frequent phrasing.
Here the lyrics what I copied:
Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace,
good will toward men.
My understanding
It’s pretty straightforward, The song is a celebration of the birth of Jesus, with angels proclaiming glory to God and expressing the hope for peace and goodwill among people.

It was a simple little project, but it actually made me feel more connected to the song. Now, when I sing “Glory to God in the Highest” this Christmas, I’ll have a much better appreciation for what I’m actually singing about. Sometimes, it’s the small things that make a big difference!
