Okay, so I’ve been planning a trip to a Gurudwara for a while now, and I wanted to make sure I was being respectful of their customs. One of the big things is the dress code, especially for women. So, I did a little digging and wanted to share what I learned and how I actually put it into practice.
My Research and What I did
First, I looked up some information online. It’s always good to get a basic understanding. I found out that modesty is key. It’s all about showing respect for the place of worship.

- Heads covered: I learned that both men and women need to cover their heads inside the Gurudwara. This is a sign of respect.
- Shoulders and knees covered: I read that it’s important to wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. No shorts or sleeveless tops.
- Shoes off: It is a given, take your shoes off before entering the main hall.
Putting it into practice
So, based on what I learned, here’s what I did:
- Picked out a long-sleeved, loose-fitting top. I made sure it wasn’t see-through or revealing.
- Chose a pair of long pants. Jeans were fine, but nothing ripped or too tight.
- Grabbed a scarf. This was the most important part! I made sure it was big enough to comfortably cover my head. I went with a simple, plain one, nothing too flashy.
- Before enter the main hall, I took off my shoes and put it in provided place.
- I coverd my head with the scarf before enter the Gurudwara.
Honestly, it was pretty easy! It wasn’t about looking fashionable, it was about being respectful. And I felt good knowing I was doing my part to honor their traditions. It’s always a bit nerve-wracking visiting a new place with different customs, but with a little preparation, it was totally fine. I felt comfortable and welcome, and that’s what really mattered.
