Alright, so I finally got around to sitting through Dark Season 2 Episode 2 again, the one they call ‘Dark Matter’. And honestly, even the second or third time, it still kind of makes my head spin a bit. It’s one of those episodes, you know?
What Went Down (As I Remember It)
First off, you’ve got Jonas, who’s still stuck way off in the future, 2052. Place looks absolutely wrecked, and he’s wandering around trying to figure out how to get back, or what to even do. It’s pretty bleak stuff.

Then there’s a biggie with Claudia Tiedemann. The older version of her, the one who seems to know a heck of a lot, actually meets an even older version of herself. Yeah, you heard that. Her future future self. They have this intense chat, and you just know it’s all about manipulating time and trying to fix things, or maybe make them worse, who knows with this show?
Meanwhile, back in 1986, good old Egon Tiedemann, the cop, is still digging into the missing kids. He’s starting to get suspicious about Helge Doppler, especially after finding those weird coins. He’s connecting dots, but they’re like, a constellation of confusing dots.
And you can’t forget Katharina Nielsen. She’s absolutely frantic, searching for Mikkel. It’s heartbreaking to watch her, plastering missing posters and just desperate for any clue. She even goes into the caves. Man, that woman is going through it.
Why I’m Even Bothering to Rehash This
So, why am I laying all this out? Well, I was trying to explain this show to my buddy, let’s call him Steve. He’s a smart dude, usually picks things up quick. We got to this episode, ‘Dark Matter’, and he just hit pause. He looked at me, completely serious, and said, “Wait, so the lady with the white hair is talking to herself, but older? And the kid from the 80s is now in the future, which is actually the past for some other people? Are they just making this up as they go along?”
I swear, I tried to explain. I really did. I started talking about bootstrap paradoxes and how time isn’t linear in Winden. Next thing I know, I’m the one sounding like I’ve got scrambled eggs for brains. My sentences started tangling up, I was mixing up characters and timelines. Steve just kind of nodded slowly, then asked if we could watch a cooking show instead. Said his brain needed a cool-down lap. I don’t blame him. It’s not like your typical show where there’s a good guy, a bad guy, and a problem to solve. This is more like a 5000-piece puzzle where all the pieces are the same color, and the picture on the box keeps changing.
It’s like that one time I tried to fix my washing machine by watching a blurry online video. Started off all confident, ended up with more water on the floor than in the machine and had to call a pro anyway. That’s what trying to untangle Dark feels like sometimes. You think you’ve got a thread, and then it just leads to another knot.

Back to the Episode Itself
But yeah, this episode, ‘Dark Matter’, it’s a big one for setting up even more of the crazy timeline stuff. You really feel how everyone is caught in this massive web. The atmosphere in 2052 is just oppressive, and every interaction feels loaded with secrets.
- Jonas’s desperation is palpable.
- The Claudia meeting Claudia thing just ramps up the whole ‘who is playing who’ game.
- Egon’s investigation feels like he’s so close, yet so far from the actual truth.
It’s a key piece, this episode. It doesn’t give you many easy answers, that’s for sure. It just throws more kindling on the fire of questions. And honestly, that’s part of why I keep coming back to it, trying to piece it all together, even if it makes me feel like I need a long nap afterwards. It’s a proper workout for the old noggin.
