Okay, so I’ve been meaning to learn the lyrics to “In His Eyes” from Jekyll & Hyde for ages. It’s such a powerful duet, and I wanted to be able to sing along properly, not just mumble the parts I kinda knew.
First, I grabbed my phone and opened up a lyrics website. I usually just google “[song title] lyrics” and pick one of the top results. This time, I found a site that seemed pretty reliable, with the lyrics clearly laid out.
Then, I played the song on Spotify. I listened to it once all the way through, just following along with the lyrics on the screen. I tried to get a feel for the phrasing and how the words matched the melody.
Next, I focused on Lucy’s parts first. I replayed her verses a few times, reading the lyrics and trying to sing along. There were a couple of tricky lines where I had to slow down the playback speed to really catch the words. This really is helpful.

- Focused on pronunciation and timing.
- Used the “repeat” function on Spotify a LOT.
After I felt somewhat comfortable with Lucy, I moved on to Emma’s parts. Her sections were a little easier for me, probably because I’m more familiar with that vocal range, I think. I just use the same way which I did for Lucy’s part.
The hardest part was definitely the overlapping sections where they’re both singing different lines. To tackle that, I actually wrote out those specific parts on a piece of paper, with Lucy’s lyrics on one side and Emma’s on the other. This is very helpful, I have to say.
This way, I could visually see how the lines intertwined and practice singing each part separately, then together.
My Practice Breakdown:
- Separate practice for Lucy and Emma.
- Visualized the overlapping parts by writing them down.
- Practiced the duet parts slowly, gradually increasing speed.
- Sing it loud!
Finally, I tried singing the whole song from start to finish, following along with the lyrics. It wasn’t perfect, but I definitely felt way more confident than before. I still need to practice a bit more to get it completely smooth, but I’m happy with the progress!
It took a solid hour, maybe a bit more, but I felt very satified!
