The Story of “KD Whisky” – Our Little Project Adventure

Alright, so let me tell you about this “KD Whisky” thing. It wasn’t an actual drink, you know, though maybe it should have been, considering how things went sometimes. We kicked this off, me and a couple of others, thinking it’d be this awesome tool to make our daily grind a bit smoother. We were all hyped up at the start.

The main idea? We wanted to build this super simple dashboard. Like, one screen to see everything important. We had stuff all over the place – tasks in one system, build results in another, customer notes somewhere else entirely. It was a real pain just trying to get a clear picture of what was going on. So, KD Whisky was meant to fix that.

Getting Our Hands Dirty – How We Started

So, we just jumped right in. First thing we did, or tried to do, was list out all the places we needed to pull data from. Man, that was an eye-opener. Some systems had decent APIs, thank goodness. Others? We were looking at scraping web pages or dealing with weird CSV files that someone had to export by hand. A real mixed bag.

We decided to use Python for the backend stuff. Why Python? Well, a few of us knew it a bit, and it seemed quick to get started with. For the front part, the bit you see, we thought, “Let’s keep it really, really basic. Just some plain HTML, maybe a sprinkle of JavaScript.” Oh, how naive we were.

  • I remember we first tackled connecting to our task management system. Spent a good few days fighting with its API documentation, but we got it pulling task info. That felt like a big win!
  • Then, we went for the build server status. That one was actually easier than we thought; it just spat out some XML we could parse.
  • The customer notes spreadsheet… ugh. That was a nightmare. It was a manual export, so we had to build this little uploader thing. Definitely more complicated than we first imagined.

Where Things Started to Unravel a Bit

As we kept trying to add more and more data sources, our Python code on the backend started to look like a plate of spaghetti. Seriously. No real plan, just bits of script calling other bits of script. Trying to find bugs? Forget about it. You’d change one tiny thing, and something completely different would break on the other side of the system.

And that “simple HTML and JavaScript” frontend? Yeah, that quickly turned into a jungle of jQuery selectors and styles thrown in everywhere. Every time we wanted to add a new chart or a new table to the dashboard, it felt like we were performing open-heart surgery on the code. It was stressful.

To be honest, we weren’t great at talking to each other about it either. One person would be off building a new feature, while someone else was changing a core bit of how things worked, without really telling anyone. It was chaotic, like everyone was running in their own direction sometimes.

Why “KD Whisky”? The Name Story

So, why did we call it KD Whisky? Well, “KD” were the initials of Ken and Dave, the two guys who really pushed for this idea from the get-go. And “Whisky”? That was a bit of an in-joke. It wasn’t because we were drinking on the job, not really! But there were definitely some late nights, powered by stale coffee, where the thought of a nice whisky at the end of it all kept us going. Plus, the whole project felt a bit… homemade, a bit potent and unpredictable, like some home-brewed spirit. The name just stuck because it kind of summed up the whole vibe.

So, What Happened in the End?

Did KD Whisky become the amazing, all-in-one dashboard we dreamed of? Nah, not really. We got a version of it up and running, sure. It did show some data. But it was clunky to use, it broke down pretty often, and to be frank, nobody really trusted the information it showed because it just felt so fragile, like it could fall apart at any moment.

Keeping it alive was a constant battle. Every time one of the systems we pulled data from changed its API, or someone tweaked a file format, KD Whisky would just stop working. Fixing it felt like playing whack-a-mole; you’d fix one bug, and two more would pop up.

But hey, we definitely learned a ton. Mostly, we learned what not to do next time. Like, maybe spend a bit more time planning things out before diving into code. Maybe use some proper tools or frameworks instead of just trying to wing it with basic scripts when things get complicated. And for sure, communicate way better as a team.

After a few months of constantly patching it and propping it up, KD Whisky just sort of… faded away. People slowly went back to their old, scattered ways of checking things. It became one of those “Hey, remember that KD Whisky project?” kind of stories. A good learning curve, looking back, but man, it was a bumpy ride getting there. That’s my little tale of the KD Whisky adventure for you!
