MX Clears explained for everyone: Understand why these keyboard switches are so well loved by users!

Posted on 16/06/202516/06/2025 by InsightWriter

Alright, let’s talk about these MX Clear switches. It’s funny, you know, how you can go years just typing on whatever keyboard comes with a computer, and then one day, bam, you fall down the rabbit hole of mechanical keyboards. That was me, totally clueless, then suddenly obsessed.

My Keyboard Journey Started Simple

I started off like most folks, I guess. Used those mushy membrane keyboards for ages. Then I heard about mechanical ones, and my first taste was probably some kind of Red switch. People said they were good for gaming, super smooth and all that. And yeah, they were smooth. Almost too smooth, like typing on air. I didn’t hate it, but it wasn’t quite… satisfying? It felt like something was missing for actual typing, you know?

Then I tried Browns. Everyone says Browns are the middle ground, a bit of tactile bump, not too loud. And they were okay. Better than Reds for typing, for sure. I got that little bump, but it was so subtle. Sometimes I’d wonder if I even felt it. I used them for a good while, but that itch for something more specific just kept bugging me.

The Hunt for the “Right” Feel

So, I started digging around more. Reading stuff online, watching videos until my eyes blurred. It’s a whole world out there, isn’t it? Linear, tactile, clicky… my head was spinning. I knew I didn’t want clicky ones, those Razer Greens or whatever, too loud for me and anyone around me. And the Speed Silvers, well, they sounded like they were for serious gamers, focused on speed. That wasn’t my main thing. I just wanted a really good typing feel.

That’s when I stumbled upon mentions of Cherry MX Clears. People described them as being like Browns, but with a bit more oomph. A “more pronounced tactile feedback,” they said. That sounded interesting. A bit heavier too, apparently. I was a bit hesitant about “heavier,” worried my fingers would get tired.

Finally Trying MX Clears

Eventually, I just decided to go for it. Got myself a board with MX Clears. And let me tell you, the first time I typed on them, it was a bit of a surprise. They definitely felt different.

Here’s what I found, just my own experience:

  • The tactile bump is way more noticeable than on Browns. Like, you actually feel it clearly with each press. It’s not a sharp click, just a solid, round bump.
  • They are a bit heavier. You do need a little more force. At first, my fingers were like, “Whoa, what’s this?” But honestly, I got used to it pretty quick. It actually made me feel like my typing was more deliberate, fewer accidental key presses.
  • They’re not super loud. Quieter than clicky switches, for sure. They have a nice, solid “thock” sound when you type, especially if you don’t bottom out too hard.

I wouldn’t call them smooth like Reds, because that bump is the main event. But it’s a satisfying bump. It’s like the switch is confirming, “Yep, you pressed me.” After a while, going back to Browns felt a bit wishy-washy to me.

So, What’s the Verdict?

For me, these MX Clears kind of hit a sweet spot for typing. That extra resistance and the clearer bump just felt more substantial. It’s not for everyone, I get that. If you want light and fast, these probably ain’t it. And if you’re coming from super light switches, it might take a moment to adjust.

But yeah, that’s been my journey with them. I spent a good amount of time, and money, trying different things, and these MX Clears were a pretty significant stop on that road. They really showed me how much a switch can change the whole experience of using a keyboard. It’s a personal thing, this keyboard hobby, but that’s my two cents on the Clears. Just took some trial and error to figure out what worked for me.
