Okay, so today I messed around with something called “Schorre Boom”. Honestly, I’d never heard of it before, but it sounded kinda cool, like some sort of explosion of creativity or something. Turns out, it’s related to drawing trees – like, actual trees, not family trees.
Getting Started
First, I had to figure out what the heck this thing even was. I did some digging, and it seems like it’s a way to represent how branches split off from a tree trunk. It’s all about angles and lengths and stuff. I’m not a math whiz, so this was already a little intimidating.

I found some basic info, and it seemed like the core idea was to start with a trunk, then add branches, and then add smaller branches to those, and so on. Each branch would be a bit shorter and at a slightly different angle than the one it came from.
The Messy Middle
I grabbed a piece of paper and a pencil – old school, I know. I started with a simple line for the trunk. Then I tried to add a branch. Okay, not too bad. Then another branch… and another… and pretty soon it just looked like a scribbled mess. My “tree” looked more like a hairy caterpillar than anything majestic.
I realized I needed a bit more structure. So, I tried to be more deliberate about the angles. I made sure each new branch was a little bit less angled than the previous one. And I tried to make them progressively shorter. This helped a bit, but it still looked pretty… wonky.
Iteration and (Slight) Improvement
I kept at it. I erased a lot. I drew a bunch of really ugly trees. I even tried using a ruler at one point, which felt ridiculous, but hey, I was desperate. Slowly, very slowly, things started to look a little better. My trees were still far from perfect, but they were starting to resemble… well, trees!
One thing I noticed was that small changes in the angles made a BIG difference. Like, if I made the branches too similar in angle, it looked flat and boring. But if I made them too different, it looked crazy and chaotic.
The (Unfinished) Result
So, after a good chunk of time, I had something that… kinda sorta resembled a tree using the Schorre Boom principles. It’s definitely not art gallery material, but it’s a start! I can see how with more practice, and maybe some actual tools (instead of just a pencil and paper), I could get better at this. It’s actually kind of relaxing, in a weird way.

I think next time, I’ll try adding more layers of branches, so go deeper.
