So I got into mechanical keyboards a while back and I just couldn’t figure out this whole “tactile” vs “linear” switch thing. It was driving me nuts! I read a bunch of stuff online but it was all pretty confusing. So, I decided to just try them out myself and see what’s what.
First, I ordered a couple of different key switches – some tactile ones (I think they were Browns) and some linear ones (Reds, maybe?). I figured the best way to understand the difference was to just feel it under my own fingers.

When they arrived, I popped them into my hot-swappable keyboard. I started typing away with the tactile ones. I noticed right away that there’s this little bump you feel when you press the key down. It’s like a little confirmation that you’ve pressed the key. It felt kinda satisfying, to be honest. I typed out a bunch of stuff, emails, documents, just to get a good feel for them.
Then, I switched over to the linear ones. These were smooth as butter. No bump at all. Just a straight, smooth press all the way down. It felt really different. I typed some more with these, and I noticed that they were a lot quieter than the tactile ones. There was this very noticeable difference of sound, which is weird for me.
Here’s what I figured out after messing around with both:
- Tactile switches are great if you like that feedback. That little bump is kinda reassuring, especially if you’re not the most accurate typist. I guess some people think it helps them type faster because they don’t have to press the key all the way down, but I didn’t really notice a difference in my speed.
- Linear switches are awesome if you want something smooth and quiet. They’re probably better for gaming because they’re so responsive and don’t make much noise. And if you work in an office or something, they won’t annoy your coworkers as much.
At the end of the day, it really just comes down to personal preference. There’s no right or wrong answer. Some people swear by tactile, others love linear. I think I’m leaning towards linear for gaming, but I still like the feel of tactile for everyday typing. I think they are more comfortable for me.
Anyway, I just wanted to share my little experiment. Hope this helps someone out there who’s as confused as I was!
