Want to know how to exfoliate under eyes gently? Discover the best methods for your sensitive skin.

Alright, let’s get into this under-eye situation. For what felt like forever, my under-eye area was just… problematic. I’m talking concealer settling into every tiny line, making me look way more tired than I actually felt. And then, these annoying little white bumps, I think they’re called milia, started showing up. It was driving me crazy, truly.

I’d obviously heard about exfoliating your face, everyone does it. But under the eyes? My immediate reaction was a big, fat NOPE. That skin is incredibly thin, you know? Like, you can practically see through it. The thought of putting anything even remotely scrub-like near there? Terrifying.

Figuring It Out The Hard Way

But those little bumps weren’t budging, and my makeup just looked… sad. So, I started thinking, there must be a super, super gentle way to deal with this. I knew for sure I wasn’t going to use my regular face exfoliator. That stuff is way too harsh. Imagine the irritation! It would have been a red, puffy disaster. So, I started my research, digging around, trying to find out what could possibly work without wrecking my skin.

My first few attempts? Let’s just say they weren’t stellar. I tried a tiny bit of a very mild cleanser on a cotton pad once, thinking I could gently buff. Bad idea. Still felt like too much pulling. Then I thought about those konjac sponges, but even that felt risky for such a delicate spot. I was getting a bit frustrated, to be honest. It felt like I was trying to defuse a bomb, not do some skincare.

Eventually, I landed on the idea of a really, really mild chemical exfoliant. Something with a super low percentage of Lactic Acid, because I read that’s one of the gentler ones. And when I say low, I mean LOW. I hunted for a product that was specifically formulated to be gentle, or a serum that I could dilute or use the tiniest speck of.

My Under-Eye Exfoliation Routine – What I Actually Do

So, here’s what I ended up doing, and what’s been working for me. And I mean me, specifically. Your skin might be different, so always, always be careful.

  • First, I make sure my face is totally clean. Like, properly cleansed, no makeup residue, nothing. This is usually part of my evening routine.

  • Then, I take the absolute smallest amount of the gentle exfoliating liquid. When I say small, I mean like, barely a pinhead. Seriously. Less is definitely more here.

  • I don’t rub. I repeat, DO NOT RUB. I gently, and I mean feather-light gently, pat it onto the under-eye area, focusing on where I have texture or those milia bumps. I stay well away from my lash line and the very delicate skin right up close to my eye.

  • I don’t do this every day. Oh my goodness, no. At first, I tried it once a week. Just once. To see how my skin would react. My skin seemed okay with it, so now I might do it twice a week, tops, if I feel like I need it. But often, once a week is plenty.

  • After I’ve patted it on, I let it sit for a few minutes – whatever the product instructions say, or sometimes even less time to be safe. Some stuff you leave on, some you rinse. Mine is a leave-on, but it’s so mild.

  • Then, and this is super important, I follow up with a really hydrating eye cream. You’ve just exfoliated, so that skin needs moisture and soothing. Slather on that good, gentle eye cream. Pat, pat, pat.

The biggest thing I learned was patience and being incredibly gentle. It’s not a race. I started noticing a difference after a few weeks. The milia started to shrink, and my concealer went on a bit smoother. It wasn’t some overnight miracle, but it was progress.

Honestly, the whole process taught me to really listen to my skin. If it ever felt even slightly irritated, I’d back off immediately. No pushing through it. The under-eye area is just too precious for that kind of rough treatment. So, yeah, that’s my journey with under-eye exfoliation. It took some trial and error, and a whole lot of caution, but I finally found a way that works for me without turning my eyes into a disaster zone.
