Well, folks, I reckon it’s that time again. The Washington State Track Meet for 2024 is all wrapped up, and there’s plenty to talk about. Every year, these young athletes come out and give it their all, and this year was no different. Whether it’s the sprints or the distance races, the boys and girls out there are really making a name for themselves. So, if you’re wondering who came out on top this time around, here’s a little rundown of what happened at the big meet.
Sprints: 100 meters, 200 meters, and 400 meters

Now, if you’re talking about speed, you can’t leave out the sprinters. The 100-meter race, which is all about who’s the fastest, had some fierce competition. Just like always, those boys and girls were off like lightning! In the 100 meters, Rodrick Fisher from East Valley (Spokane) took the crown with a record time of 10.48 seconds—man, that boy can run! Over in the 200 meters, we saw Jacob Andrews from Sehome take first place with a blistering 21.21 seconds. And don’t get me started on the 400 meters. It was a close one, but in the end, it was Timothy White from Olympia who grabbed the gold.
Distance: 800 meters, 1600 meters, and 3200 meters
Now, if you ask me, distance races are where the real heart is. These kids gotta have legs of steel and a will of iron. Over in the 800 meters, Sarah Miller from Walla Walla showed everyone how it’s done, finishing strong and crossing that line first. In the 1600 meters, which is a mile-long race, Johnny Beck from Ridgefield pulled ahead right at the end, and you could see the determination in his eyes. And in the 3200 meters, which is a whole lotta running, Lucas Simmons from Seattle brought home the victory. These kids sure have some grit, I tell ya!
Hurdles: 110 meters and 300 meters
Now, you gotta give it up for the hurdlers. Ain’t easy jumping over them hurdles at full speed, but Emily Thomas from Tacoma made it look easy, winning the 110-meter hurdles. Over in the 300-meter hurdles, Caleb Johnson from Yakima pushed through with a first-place finish. These young athletes showed some real talent in these tricky events.
Relays: 400 meters and 1600 meters

If you want to talk teamwork, look no further than the relay races. In the 400-meter relay, the Spokane team came through in the end, putting together a perfect pass to take home the gold. Over in the 1600-meter relay, it was the Seattle squad who grabbed the top spot. It’s always something special when a group of athletes can come together and work as one.
Field Events: Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, and High Jump
Now, don’t forget the field events! We saw some amazing performances in the shot put, discus, and javelin. In the shot put, Tyler Harris from Pullman threw a record-breaking toss that had the crowd roaring. Over in the discus, Rachel Green from Spokane set a new personal best and walked away with the gold. As for the javelin, it was Matthew King from Vancouver who sent that spear flying. And for the high jump, Kelly Turner from Bellingham cleared a height that left everyone in awe.
Final Thoughts
All in all, the Washington State Track Meet for 2024 was a big success. It was filled with thrilling races, jaw-dropping field events, and plenty of moments that had the crowd on their feet. The athletes sure gave it their all, and some even set new records! As always, it’s inspiring to see these young folks chasing their dreams and giving it their best on the track. If you’ve got a chance to see them in action next year, you best take it, ’cause it’s somethin’ you won’t want to miss.
Until next time, folks, let’s give a big ol’ cheer for all these talented young athletes, and may they keep runnin’, jumpin’, and throwin’ their way to greatness!
